on solstice day

On summer solstice day (fine weather and cheap petrol, of course), we drove down to neighbouring village of Moeraki. The touristy bit of the village was choked with tourists, but the non-touristy zones over the hill were quite quiet.

This village with its delightful beach is called the first Kaik, and it's one of the earlier settlements, with just a few baches. Some of them are right on the beach, hardly big enough for a bed. According to a knitter's natter, our resident bookworm, Keri Hulme wrote about this kaik in her book The Bone People.
