The first animals we got hold of when we moved here were worms.
They are integral part of our living system here, digesting refuse from the kitchen.
We have three bins in the kitchen, one for chooks, one for worms and one for none of the above like (ie lemon, onion and garlic peel).
Worms can digest cardboard and paper as well.
We are about half way through the huge amount of wrappers and boxes we used for moving which we refused to send to landfill, or for that matter, 'recycling'.
Recycling is an energy intensive process.
On site processing is far more energy efficient than sending the material around the world.
In about another twelve months, all of it will have been happily consumed by the worms.
This digester also produces worm wee fertiliser for the garden.
Thus, it does not just digest kitchen refuse but also connects our food consumption with food production.
